The Role

We are seeking one software engineer to join our New York team and work within our Target Identification product area. At BenevolentAI we are developing software systems to enable our machine learning, informatics, and drug discovery programmes. You will apply your software engineering background and rigour to develop and execute a full project, working with more senior software engineers and the various teams within the product area. As part of the Target Identification product area, you will work within the BioQuest team, working on the core engineering of a major bioinformatics data pipeline. This will include working closely with bioinformaticians to understand the functionality that produces the data, as well as with engineers to implement the features within a newly designed extensible, testable, and performant domain structure. You will learn about the design and development of high-performance data pipelines, and how to create production-ready features to run in them, including how to write effective tests and run them within a Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment process.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Pursue a research project to investigate new approaches in applying tech-driven methods for drug discovery and development.
  • Work as a member of a cross-functional team comprising specialists in informatics, engineering, AI, drug discovery and product for applied research.
  • You will discuss system design ideas with senior engineers in the team, on developing robust, reliable, and flexible systems.
  • Work with bioinformaticians to understand the existing functionality.
  • Implement features within the data pipeline to conform to a domain model.
  • Assist engineers in writing tests for data generation.

We are looking for someone with

  • A strong background showcasing creativity and persistence in efforts.
  • A BSc/BEng, MSc/MEng or PhD in engineering, computer science or a related field, or equivalent/alternative commercial or academic experience.
  • Strong programming skills (Python, Java etc)
  • A problem-solving, impact-oriented mindset with a flexible approach to frameworks and technologies.
  • Good communication skills who enjoys working in a collaborative team environment.
Nice to haves
  • Familiarity with Make and other Unix tools.
  • Familiarity with cloud services, particularly AWS, Docker and Kubernetes.
