Software Engineer Internship · London

With over 35 nationalities and a range of backgrounds represented in our Benevolent team, we aim to build an inclusive environment where our people can bring their authentic selves to work, be respected for who they are and the exceptional work they do. We welcome and actively encourage applications from all sections of society and are committed to offering equal employment opportunities regardless of sex, race, religion or belief, ethnic or national origin, marital, domestic or civil partnership status, sexual orientation, gender identity, parental status, disability, age, citizenship, or any other basis. We see our diversity as an asset as we tackle challenging problems that bridge the gap between drug discovery and technology.

The Role

We are seeking software engineers to join our London teams. At BenevolentAI we are developing software systems to enable our machine learning, informatics, and drug discovery programmes. You will apply your software engineering background and rigour to develop and execute a full project, working with more senior software engineers and the various teams within the product area.

Product Area

We have one role available in each of the following three product areas:

  • As part of the Precision Medicine product area, you will work within the pmpt-omics squad. You will work on porting a well-known and widely used bioinformatics package called fgsea from R to Python. fgsea is the only R dependency of our production pipeline, and your work will help us to simplify the architecture of our pipeline significantly. This project will allow you to learn about bioinformatics and work on a performance-critical algorithm. You will implement a moderately complex, statistics related algorithm in a systems programming language (C, C++ or Rust) or Cython and include it in a Python library.
  • As part of the Knowledge product area, you will work within the Genomics and Genetics team that has established a robust and sustainable end-to-end strategy to streamline the capture, processing and analyses of omics data (such as genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, and metabolomics). As part of this solution, you will design and build an automated ETL pipeline to search for omics datasets from several public repositories. This project will facilitate the discovery of relevant datasets to assist BenevolentAI’s drug discovery efforts.
  • As part of the Apps & Infrastructure product area, you will work with our web applications that connect to a Graphql middleware that retrieves and collates data from upstream APIs into a domain-specific model. Such middleware interacts with a relational database used to store data that needs to be persisted and maintained as our domain model evolves. Since the use cases for this product are increasing, we would like to explore tooling and strategies that could help us to better monitor and improve the scalability of our middleware layer. You would be joining a team that is responsible for the development of all user-facing products at Benevolent, we are a mixture of Fullstack Engineers and Designers. You will be responsible for implementing Graphql cost analysis tools, working with our SRE experts to implement network monitoring dashboards tailored for our products, evaluating our current ORM connection management tooling scaling capabilities and developing APIs to support our product development endeavours.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Pursue a research project to investigate new approaches in applying tech-driven methods for drug discovery and development.
  • Work as a member of a cross-functional team comprising specialists in informatics, engineering, AI, drug discovery and product for applied research.
  • You will pursue a project by applying rigorous software engineering best practices.
  • You will discuss system design ideas with senior engineers in the team, on developing robust, reliable, and flexible systems.

We are looking for someone with

  • A strong background showcasing creativity and persistence in efforts.
  • A BSc/BEng, MSc/MEng or PhD in engineering, computer science or a related field, or equivalent/alternative commercial or academic experience.
  • Strong programming skills (Python, Java, Node.js etc)
  • A problem-solving, impact-oriented mindset with a flexible approach to frameworks and technologies.
  • Good communication skills who enjoys working in a collaborative team environment.
  • Interest in or contributions to open-source technologies.
Nice to haves

  • Familiar with a systems programming language or Cython.
  • Familiar with R, Statistics and Algorithms.

For Knowledge product area:

  • Basic algorithms and data structures for software development.
  • Experience working with at least one of the following software systems: Databases, APIs, microservice architectures.

For Apps & Infrastructure product area:
