Drug Discovery

Principal Molecular Pharmacologist Scientist

The Company

BenevolentAI unites technology with human intelligence to re-engineer drug discovery and deliver life-changing medicines. We have developed the Benevolent Platform®, a drug discovery platform built on powerful data foundations with state of the art machine learning and AI technology. Our technology empowers scientists to decipher the vast and complex code underlying human biology, find new ways to treat disease and personalise medicines to patients. Benevolent has active in-house R&D drug programmes in disease areas such as neurodegeneration, immunology, oncology and inflammation and has research and commercial collaborations with leading pharmaceutical and research organisations. The company is headquartered in London with a research facility in Cambridge (UK) and a further office in New York.

Who we are

We are an eclectic bunch at Benevolent, united by our belief that innovative thinking and purposeful technology can truly change outcomes for the better. Our mission is to re-engineer drug discovery and deliver life-changing medicines for patients in need and we do this by applying AI, machine learning and other advanced technologies to reinvent the ways drugs are discovered and developed. We strive to bring together unique skills and perspectives across biology, chemistry, engineering, AI research, informatics, precision medicine and drug discovery.

The Role

We are looking for a number of innovative and highly creative drug discovery scientists with a background in molecular pharmacology and/or molecular and cellular biology, particularly in the context of pathological mechanisms underlying human diseases.

You will make significant contributions to our technology-enabled drug discovery programmes by generating novel therapeutic target hypotheses and delivering robust preclinical target validation data packages. You will apply your deep understanding of biological processes and drug discovery to rapidly move projects through preclinical research and development.

Based at our London office, you will work closely with experts in drug discovery, artificial intelligence, informatics, patient stratification, clinical translation and commercialisation. This is a non-lab based position.

Primary Responsibilities

  • With a strong molecular and cell biology background and an understanding of mechanisms underlying human disease, you will contribute to the generation and prioritisation of novel therapeutic hypotheses across a range of disease areas.
  • You will be responsible for providing leadership to define and implement experimental plans to validate these therapeutic hypotheses using cell-based disease-relevant models.
  • You will critically analyse and interpret data, define realistic timelines for studies, and meet delivery deadlines within a fast-paced and collaborative environment.
  • You will contribute to the identification and assessment of business development opportunities as well as fostering external collaborative relationships with academic leaders and contract research scientists.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Familiarity with working within small or large molecule drug discovery programs as a biology representative with a basic understanding of associated disciplines, e.g. DMPK, toxicity/safety assessment and medicinal chemistry would be desirable

We are looking for someone with

  • BSc / MSc / PhD in biological sciences with 3+ years of experience in the application of molecular pharmacology principles to the drug discovery arena or a closely related discipline.
  • Evidence of creative thinking and problem solving, confidently applying novel strategies to move projects to important decision points quickly and efficiently.
  • Track record of significant contributions to shaping project strategies and successfully delivering results to answer key scientific questions, ideally within the drug discovery industry.
  • Experience in one or more areas of human disease or mechanistic pathways associated with disease, such as neurodegeneration, immunology, fibrosis, diseases of aging or oncology.
  • Track record of prioritising and initiating new projects and areas of research, integrating data and expertise from multiple sources, with changing priorities and deadlines.
  • Experience of working with Contract Research providers: CRO selection, design & agreement of work plans and analysis of data packages would be an advantage
  • Experience of successfully working in multi-disciplinary teams, ideally in a drug discovery & development environment, with excellent communication skills and the ability to forge productive relationships and collaborations both internally and externally.

Together, we envision a world in which no disease goes untreated. If you are benevolent, curious, want to tackle real world problems and are willing to embrace new ideas, hit that ‘apply’ button and join us.
