Industrial Placement Student - Computational Medicinal Chemistry

The Role

The Early Discovery Chemistry Team is central to the validation of our AI-derived target predictions and is responsible for overseeing their entry into our drug discovery portfolio. We are looking for an exceptional industrial placement student to support the computational evaluation of targets prior to portfolio entry, as well as contribute to the development of our internal target evaluation platform.

In this role, you will have the opportunity to develop a broad skill set in computational chemistry, cheminformatics, and medicinal chemistry, while collaborating with scientists from various fields including chemistry, data science, machine learning, and biology. During the placement, you will gain insights into how we use various tools and data sources to carefully select the most promising targets for our drug discovery efforts.

You will have a dedicated supervisor to help you learn and get the best out of your placement. An understanding of the small-molecule drug discovery process and computational methods (e.g. protein structure visualisation, data cleaning and manipulation) would be highly beneficial. This is a technical role, so some familiarity with coding (e.g. Python) or data pipelining software (e.g. KNIME) is essential. You’ll also receive full training on the use of specific tools used here at BenevolentAI. The placement will be based at BenevolentAI’s London office and is desk-based. You’ll receive a competitive salary and benefits during your placement.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the computational evaluation of prospective targets to determine their tractability for a small-molecule chemistry project
  • Support the ongoing development and evaluation of our internal target evaluation products and tools
  • Develop workflows/pipelines to bring together data from different sources to automate and facilitate Early Discovery Chemistry activities

We are looking for someone with

  • An undergraduate student studying for a Chemical Sciences, Natural Sciences, or Computational Sciences degree, available to undertake their industrial placement in 2023
  • A fast learner, with a keen interest in how data science, computational chemistry and AI can be applied to drug discovery
  • A team player with excellent communication skills, able to discuss and explain ideas to colleagues with different backgrounds and levels of experience

Please note: You must currently be in your second/third year of a relevant undergraduate university course with the option to take a sandwich-year placement during the next academic year in order to apply.
