Drug Discovery Outsourcing Scientist

With over 35 nationalities and a range of backgrounds represented in our Benevolent team, we aim to build an inclusive environment where our people can bring their authentic selves to work, be respected for who they are and the exceptional work they do. We welcome and actively encourage applications from all sections of society and are committed to offering equal employment opportunities regardless of sex, race, religion or belief, ethnic or national origin, marital, domestic or civil partnership status, sexual orientation, gender identity, parental status, disability, age, citizenship, or any other basis. We see our diversity as an asset as we tackle challenging problems that bridge the gap between drug discovery and technology.

The Role

The Discovery Enabling Team (DET) is a cross-discipline team which supports the research activities of BenevolentAI’s scientists, research informaticians, machine learning and AI technologists. We are looking for a talented early career Scientist to join this team to manage and support selectivity and safety screening across our drug discovery portfolio. You will be responsible for streamlining data-capture across our AI-driven pipeline throughout the drug discovery process to candidate development. Working closely with our drug discovery scientists, you will directly advise them on outsourced-assays, their set up and data capture in line with DET guidelines. You will work with project teams to define study requirements, help researchers set up pilot assays as well as running, QC-qualifying, and interpreting established screens. You will manage these datasets in Dotmatics Electronic Laboratory Notebooks (ELNs) and ensure that quality data is fed back to the teams in a timely fashion.

Primary Responsibilities

  • DET outsourcing activities, for example selectivity & safety pharmacology screens, primary pharmacology screens
  • Manage outsourcing operations; including data back and circulation, compound ordering and shipping logistics, quotation requests, Contract Research Organisation (CRO) contract relationships, and budget management
  • QC data, upload and record outcomes in ELNs for timely and effective sharing of key results with project teams
  • Serve as a key DET-point of contact to internal project teams, the safety team, project management, finance, and CROs
  • Continuously improve DET’s compound-to-data workflows, Dotmatics data capture and data presentation across drug discovery
  • Coordinate with key stakeholders to ensure all study requirements are met; including target identification program leads, drug discovery core teams, safety pharmacology, project management, finance and external CROs
  • Participate in the organisation and logistics of business and collaboration meetings
  • Ensure assay requests and data strategies are developed and implemented within the expected timelines, across multiple project and target Identification teams
  • Keep up to date with technical developments in key fields, eg target and selectivity screening, safety pharmacology

We are looking for someone with

  • A new or recent life sciences graduate (MSc/BSc) passionate about developing a career in drug discovery as shown by internships, an industrial placement year, or relevant university modules
  • Good knowledge of the pharmacological principles of biological assays
  • Ability to understand pharmacologically relevant biological data such as concentration-response curves and interpret these results, for example IC50s
  • A proven ability to multitask in order to organise, coordinate and interpret multiple studies across different projects at the same time. Effectively prioritise work and respond to changing situations, keep a high attention to detail, whilst monitoring several studies simultaneously
  • A proactive problem solver who can suggest innovative solutions to improve workflows and data availability
  • Confident, clear communication, an honest individual who as the point of contact is trusted by project teams to advise and deliver
  • A positive attitude and collaborative approach, with the ability to work effectively across broad-discipline internal teams and external vendors to develop, integrate, ‘prove’ and support workflows
  • A team player who is able to learn new technology and enjoys assisting others
Nice to haves:
  • 1 year lab or drug discovery experience or an industrial placement year in a drug discovery
  • Working knowledge of data-management tools such as Dotmatics, Excel-macros/XLfit, GraphPad Prism, IDBS-ActivityBase, KNIME and Chem/Bio ELNs
  • Experience and understanding of the challenges in handling large datasets
  • Experience of data interpretation and QC e.g. troubleshooting and understanding concentration-response curve fits
  • Outsourcing experience at any stage of the drug discovery pipeline, from early target identification to candidate nomination

We share a passion for being part of a mission that matters, and we are always looking for curious and collaborative people who share our values and want to be part of our journey.  If that sounds like a fit for you, hit the apply button and join us.
