The Role

We are looking for a Cheminformatician / Software Developer with a keen interest in designing scientific software to join our Cheminformatics team.

The Cheminformatics team is a high performing cross-functional team that seeks to apply their knowledge to a diverse range of programmes from Target Identification through Hit ID, Hit Expansion and Lead Optimisation. Our role is to aid the advancement of our small molecule Drug Discovery programmes by devising computational solutions to project-specific challenges and applying new and existing technologies to support the needs of our wider portfolio.

As a Cheminformatics Software Developer you will contribute to this challenge by designing, developing and deploying software to meet complex biochemical data requirements and user needs across chemistry. You will integrate new and existing tools into BenevolentAI’s technical infrastructure and make them available to research scientists via web-services, web-based interfaces, notebooks and workflows.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Design, build and deploy scientific software to support scientists in our Cheminformatics, Computational Chemistry and Medicinal Chemistry teams
  • Work with Cheminformaticians and Computational Chemists to identify and evaluate third-party software that meets our technical and scientific requirements
  • Collaborate with the Engineering and Product teams to effectively deploy in-house and third-party software within BenevolentAI’s technology platform
  • Apply and promote software development best practices, such as code reviews, test-driven development, pair programming
  • Communicate effectively with members of the Chemoinformatics, Computational Chemistry, Bioinformatics, Drug Discovery, Artificial Intelligence, Engineering and Product teams

We are looking for someone with

  • BSc, MSc or equivalent in cheminformatics, computer science, or a related field, with demonstrable experience in scientific software development
  • Strong and demonstrable programming and technical skills, preferably in Python
  • Demonstrable practical experience with at least one of the following frameworks:
  • Cloud computing on AWS with Kubernetes
  • Containerisation with Docker
  • GitOps
  • Practical experience developing web applications and services with frameworks, such as Streamlit, FastAPI, Flask, Django

  • Excellent communication skills, especially when working with colleagues from other specialities
Bonus points for:
  • Experience building and maintaining databases, such as PostgreSQL or MongoDB
  • Experience with open source and proprietary Chemoinformatics libraries e.g. RDKit or other leading industry toolkits
  • Familiarity with commercial Cheminformatics and computational chemistry tools, such as those from Schrodinger, ChemAxon, and KNIME
  • Experience working with typical chemical data resources, e.g. ChEMBL, SureChEMBL, and PubChem
  • Knowledge of Chemoinformatics approaches and their application to drug discovery

We share a passion for being part of a mission that matters, and we are always looking for curious and collaborative people who share our values and want to be part of our journey.  If that sounds like a fit for you, hit the apply button and join us.
