Biomedical Data Curation Specialist

The Role

You will be a part of the Data Quality team, an interdisciplinary group focused on enabling other teams across the company to more readily identify and address data quality issues, through specific quality improvement projects and the development of a data quality management framework. As a Senior Biomedical Data Curation Specialist, you will find yourself working closely with Data Quality team members and other teams across the organisation, focusing on identifying , setting up, and conducting manual data curation and quality review projects that will provide valuable company-wide data quality improvements. You will be part of the wider Informatics team who are the domain experts for biological, chemical, and clinical data at Benevolent and its application to enable drug discovery in our technology platform.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Work collaboratively and flexibly to identify, scope, and implement ways to improve data quality throughout the company through manual data curation and review.
  • Regularly conduct manual review and refinement of various biomedical datasets such as data extracted from scientific literature or patents via natural language processing or biomedical ontologies used to construct our knowledge graph.
  • Provide both detailed and high-level feedback to relevant teams based on review of their data inputs or outputs to impact the quality of our data and platform.
  • Develop and communicate protocols and guidelines as necessary to enable other contributors at BenevolentAI to participate in data curation and review tasks
  • Provide domain expertise in the processing and application of biomedical data within a multidisciplinary team of data scientists, machine learning specialists, bioinformaticians, and product managers.
  • Collaborate and communicate effectively across product, technology, and drug discovery scientific disciplines and functions to achieve BenevolentAI strategic goals.

We are looking for someone with

  • A PhD, or equivalent industrial experience in molecular biology, genetics, bioinformatics, computational biology, early-stage drug discovery, or a related field, OR BSc/MSc with 2+ years experience (preferably in industry).
  • Hands-on experience working with a variety of biomedical data types, e.g. structured data, unstructured text, genomic data, etc.
  • A deep understanding of the molecular biology underpinning at least one disease or disease area OR a broad understanding of disease biology for a variety of diseases.
  • Strong belief in the importance of data quality in powering scientific analysis and applications.
  • Detail-oriented working style with a willingness to perform somewhat laborious but highly impactful manual data review tasks to support BenevolentAI’s mission.
  • Strong communicator, both verbal and written, with an ability to share knowledge and ideas with a wide variety of stakeholders.

Nice to haves:

  • Programming experience in relevant frameworks and languages such as Python or R and shell scripting.
  • Basic understanding or experience with machine learning and/or natural language processing.
  • Experience scoping, setting up and conducting biomedical data curation activities.
  • Experience with common programming libraries that support bioinformatics, data science and machine learning activities and/or technologies such as Neo4j, Jupyter notebooks, ElasticSearch, MySQL, MongoDB, Spark, GitLab, Kubernetes.
